"Knock Knock Knock"
It was about 11:00 and the kids were at my door. They told me something in rapid Spanish, and it could have been that I just woke up or that my Spanish listening wasn't ready, but I had no idea what they said other than it involved the 3 of us.
I quickly got dressed, then had to get ready to teach them their first Language Class. I started off by giving them each a word search book to do, while I figured out what material to start with. Alvaro can't really understand nor speak English (other than repeating what you tell him), while Mercedes can understand basic English and will respond in Spanish, or catch phrases that she knows. Alvaro's favorite exchange is "hello! how are you? I'm fine thank you"
After discussing the words in the puzzle, I decided it would be more fun to walk around the house and talk about the things in each room, in Spanish and in English. Mercedes' favorite discovery were stove and vent, while Alvaro was really excited to learn the English name, bulletin board.
I later found out that what they were trying to tell me that morning was that we were going to their Grandma's house for lunch and swimming. The house is very nice, and their pool super clean. (the pool at their house was dirty after all the rain, so we drained it and are going to clean it)
The pool was built over 50 years ago, but its still very nice. I taught Alvaro how to do a flip turn when you are at the end of swimming a lap. He was very excited when he got it right.
They are great kids! I'm so happy I get to live with them for a month.
We eat lots of icees and frozen snacks because its "So hot!" Their mom is always complaining about the heat, but I don't think its so bad. We get to go in the pool and have sweets every day, what could be wrong with that?
Me with the kids after a day at the pool :)
That night we went over to Magui's sister's house to watch the Spain v. Germany game, and to have dinner. They were soooo excited when Spain won, and it was really neat to be there with them. They put on "we are the champions" and sang along while lighting off fireworks and noise makers. Antonio was so proud of his new pool with its color changing lights, that he put it on RED in honor of the win, even though its sorta bad looking, being a red pool and all.
Los Espanoles party late into the night, as we got there around 8:30 and didn't leave till after 12:30, keep in mind this is a Wendnesday, and most of the parents leave for work before 7am. Everyone was tired, but having such a good time that they stayed late. They were impressed by my Spanish and ability to keep up with the conversation which ranged from sports, to music, to being vegetarian. One of the ladies is in school to learn how to read/interpret handwriting so we talked a lot about that too.
Exhausted but excited, ends day 2.
